Council of Foods
The Council of Foods is an interactive website built to create a space for discussing the broken food system. It was born out of the need to know more about our food's origin and how it impacts the lives of people, human and nonhuman, knowledge that is often veiled behind low prices and flashy ads. On the website, visitors can decide what issue regarding the food system will be discussed and who will be participating, from a preset selection of 10 foods, each prompted to represent different values and ethical guidelines. The selection of foods and their characteristics, and positions were chosen in conversation with food system experts (farmers, researchers, activists), with the intent to reflect the complexity and multitude of opinions existing within the food system discourse. Discussions within the meetings happen between the participating foods as well as the human visitor, who is given the opportunity to raise a hand and share their opinions and questions and therefore influence the path where the discussion is heading. At the end of the meetings, a protocol is generated, including policy recommendations that could potentially be sent to local, national and international levels of decision-makers, such as the EU parliament.
